Entry requirements

A-Levels

  • You must be taking A-Level Biology plus a second science from Chemistry, Physics, Maths or Psychology. A pass in the science practical is desirable, not required.1
  • General Studies, Critical Thinking and Vocational/Applied A-Levels aren't accepted.1

GCSE

  • Grade A/7 in GCSE English and Maths, plus two science subjects at grade B/6 - all achieved before you apply.2
  • Key Skills, Functional Skills and Scottish Core Skills aren't accepted in lieu of GCSEs.1

Age

  • You can apply at 17 but must be 18 at the start of the course.2

Resits & reapplying

  • Resit A-Level grades are considered. If you retake modules but finish the A-Level within two years, the final grade is what counts.2

How Portsmouth selects for interview

Selection & shortlisting

  • Your personal statement, UCAT and GCSE/A-Level achievement are reviewed together as one combined assessment - Portsmouth publishes no split between them, so a stronger showing in one area can partly make up for a weaker UCAT.2
  • No thresholds exist yet - 2027 is Portsmouth's first cohort open to home applicants, so there's no admissions history to set a bar from.2

  • You'll have an individual interview - online or on campus.1
  • Offers are decided on your interview alongside the rest of your application - no scoring split is published.1
  • Portsmouth makes adjusted (lower) offers on widening-participation and local criteria - no BDS grade is published, so we do not model a contextual offer.3
  • Newly qualified dentists are expected to have to practise in the NHS for a minimum period - planned for home students starting from 2027/28.2

Conditional offer

  • Conditional offer: AAA (144 UCAS points) - including grade A in Biology and grade A in one other science from Chemistry, Physics, Maths or Psychology.1
