Entry requirements

A-Levels

  • You must be taking Chemistry and Biology (Human Biology counts); the third can be any subject.1
  • General Studies (or equivalent) doesn't count towards the three A-Levels.1

GCSE

  • You need grade 7/A in English, Maths and Science (Chemistry and Biology, or dual science).2
  • You need six GCSEs at grade 7/A in total.2
  • IELTS 7.0 (minimum 6.5 in each component), or an equivalent English qualification, is accepted instead of GCSE English Language 7/A.2

UCAT

  • Your UCAT cognitive total must be average or above.1
  • You need SJT Band 1 or 2 - Bands 3 and 4 are rejected.1

Resits & reapplying

  • Resits are accepted (over more than two years too), but you're expected to have at least B in each subject first time - otherwise apply once you hold AAA.1
  • No transfers - exceptional cases restart from Year 1.1

How Sheffield selects for interview

Selection & shortlisting

  • All applicants who meet the minimum requirements first have their personal statement and reference screened for career exploration and personal qualities (pass/fail). Everyone remaining is ranked by UCAT cognitive total, and the top ~300 are offered a selection-day place.1
  • Sheffield's UCAT cut-off was 2020 (converted to the 2700 scale) in every year from 2021 to 2025.1
  • The statement and reference screen is pass/fail - our rating covers the UCAT ranking.
  • No dental work experience is required - show you've explored the career: time in or observing healthcare settings, or talking to dental professionals.1

Interview & decision

  • In-person selection days, 22-26 February 2027 (invitations from late January): a 15-minute semi-structured interview with two academics and a dental student - career exploration, personal qualities, communication, commitment to Sheffield - plus a group task on respect and teamwork.1
  • All interviewed applicants are selected on interview performance alone, results by end of March. Near-misses join a reserve list ranked by interview then UCAT.1
  • Deferred entry is welcomed.1
  • Behaviour against the GDC standards or NHS Constitution at any point means rejection.1

Conditional offer

  • Conditional offer: AAA including Chemistry and Biology (practicals passed). A dentistry or health-related EPQ at B drops it to AAB with AA in Chemistry and Biology - same sitting, Sheffield as firm choice.2
