Entry requirements
A-Levels
- You must be taking Biology or Human Biology and Chemistry, and be predicted at least AAA.1
- General Studies, Critical Thinking and EPQ aren't accepted as a third A-Level - other non-standard subjects may not be either. Human Biology can replace Biology but doesn't count alongside it.1
- All three A-Levels must be studied together and sat over the standard two years, with every A2 module taken in Year 13.1
GCSE
UCAT
- Your SJT band isn't used at any stage.2
Age
- You must be 18 by 1 October of your entry year.1
Resits & reapplying
- Resits aren't considered except with extenuating circumstances.1
- Your most recent relevant qualification must be no more than 4 years old.1
- If rejected after interview at Birmingham, you're reconsidered only after significant, sustained activity since that application.1
- If you've studied dentistry previously, in any country, you aren't considered - whether or not you completed the degree.1
- Transfers aren't accepted - you can't apply while studying dentistry or any other degree.1
How Birmingham selects for interview
Selection & shortlisting
- All applicants who meet the minimum requirements first have their personal statement screened for motivation and specific reasons for dentistry (not scored). Everyone remaining is ranked by total UCAT score, and interview places go from the top down:2
- UCAT total - the only scored factor.1
- Our rating covers the UCAT ranking only - a personal statement that doesn't show motivation for dentistry can mean rejection whatever your UCAT.2
- Pathways to Birmingham applicants without a guaranteed interview get the UCAT cut-off reduced by 10%.
- If you apply to both Dentistry and another healthcare programme (such as Medicine), your application won't be considered.3
- The UCAS reference isn't scored.
- Recognised elite athletes can have the UCAT interview threshold reduced by up to 10% - contact the Sport Recruitment Manager before 30 September.1
- In 2026 the lowest UCAT invited to interview was 2190.4

- MMI of five to ten stations lasting 5-10 minutes each, with one or two assessors per station - manual dexterity is among the skills assessed.5
- All interviewed applicants are selected on interview performance alone. Ties at the offer cut are settled by an anonymous panel review of interview performance.6
- Deferred entry is accepted.1
- Interviews are in person in February half-term week - no alternative dates or online option.5
- Expected: 3+ days shadowing in an NHS dental practice plus people-focused volunteering. Not getting a placement won't on its own count against you.3
