Entry requirements
A-Levels
Offer: AAA at one sitting in three A-Levels taken together at first attempt over a maximum of two years — including Chemistry plus one of Biology/Human Biology, Maths or Physics. The same AAA floor applies to predicted grades, which are used for both eligibility and ranking. [8]
General Studies and Global Perspectives and Research are not accepted. [9]
A-Level resits are not permitted — the final three A-Levels must be obtained at first sitting over a maximum of two years. AS-module resits are allowed provided the A-Levels still sit together within two years. [10]
Combinations of Chemistry, Biology plus a non-science subject are as acceptable as all-science combinations. [11]
GCSE
Grade 6 in both English Language and Maths at GCSE. A combination of Grade 6-9 passes is expected, especially in science subjects. GCSEs are not scored — they are an eligibility floor only. [27]
A minimum of 2 GCSEs is required (English Language and Maths at Grade 6); there is no scored count of top grades.
GCSE Biology and Physics (or Dual Award Science) are recommended but not compulsory. [28]
An earlier FOI response (26-055) stated Grade 7 was required; a follow-up clarification (FOI email 003) confirmed this was an error and the website Grade 6 requirement is correct.
UCAT
No minimum UCAT cut-off is used — applicants are ranked relative to the Aberdeen applicant pool, and the threshold for interview is set dynamically each year based on the cohort. [29]
All SJT bands are welcomed — Band 4 is not an automatic rejection. SJT contributes to the UCAT decile score used in ranking, but no band excludes applicants from consideration.
International Baccalaureate
Offer: 36 points overall (not including core) with three HL subjects at grade 6 — Chemistry plus one of Biology, Maths or Physics — and three SL subjects averaging 6. Overall the IB must include Chemistry plus one further science at HL and one further science at SL; Maths Studies doesn't count as a science. [12]
Both Maths pathways — 'Analysis and approaches' and 'Applications and interpretation' — are accepted at SL or HL. [13]
International applicants: at least 36 points overall, not including core. [14]
Scottish Highers
Standard Entry: five Highers at AAAAB at one sitting, normally in S5 — including Chemistry (B minimum) plus two of Biology/Human Biology, Maths or Physics, with National 5 English and Maths at B. A typical offer then sets an achievable S6 condition of BBB with at least two subjects at Advanced Higher level. With AAABB or AAAAC at first attempt in S5 you can still be considered if estimated to achieve an extended S6 programme (one new Higher at A plus two Advanced Highers at BB; two new Highers at AA plus one Advanced Higher at B; or three Advanced Highers at ABB including Chemistry plus one science). [15]
Candidates who attempted only three Highers at first sitting are very unlikely to be considered; four Highers at AAAA at first sitting may be considered only due to school policy or very exceptional personal difficulties. [16]
Applications directly from S5 are not normally considered, and five S5 Highers without S6 studies are accepted only in very exceptional circumstances. [17]
The three required sciences don't need to be in one sitting — they may be taken across S4 to S6 with no advantage for one sitting. [18]
Foundation Apprenticeships are accepted: FA Social Services and Healthcare counts as a grade A in a science Higher, and FA Scientific Technology as an A in a non-science Higher. [19]
Other qualifications
Mature applicants: the SWAP Access to Medical Studies course (Edinburgh College, Dundee and Angus College or Glasgow Kelvin College) or a QAA-approved Access to Medicine Diploma (Level 3) with at least 45 credits at Distinction — considered case-by-case, and not open to holders of an Honours degree below 2:1. Medical-sciences programmes are not considered. [21]
Access courses must be completed within two years of the start of the proposed entry. [22]
Cambridge Pre-U Principal Subjects are accepted in combination with A-Levels — contact Medical Admissions for grade requirements. [23]
Graduates: at least an upper second class Honours (2:1) degree — all results at first sitting and within the last six years — plus Chemistry at grade B (Higher or A-Level; may be satisfied by appropriate study within the degree). Apply in your final year at the earliest; entry is to Year 1 of the five-year programme only. Dental graduates need MFDS Part A plus two years' post-qualification experience. [24]
Once the degree and Chemistry requirements are achieved, the typical graduate offer is unconditional. [25]
A non-Honours ('Ordinary') degree does not qualify — such applicants are treated as mature applicants and can upgrade via an Honours year, school-leaving qualifications or an Access course. [26]
Irish Leaving Certificate
Three Highers at H1 including Chemistry and Biology, plus three Highers at H2 including English and Maths or Physics. At Junior cycle (JCPA), Higher Merit/H2/B or better is required in English, Maths and Science. [20]
Qualification policies
Resits are not permitted — the required grades must be achieved at the first sitting (the only exception is AS-module resits, see A-Levels).
Mature applicants must have completed the minimum academic requirements within six years of the start of their proposed entry (Access courses: within two years). [7]
Application history
Up to 3 applications accepted: candidates who have applied to the Aberdeen MBChB and been unsuccessful on three occasions are normally not considered for any further applications. [30]
Applicants who have previously started a medicine degree — at Aberdeen or elsewhere — are not considered, even where they did not finish the degree. [31]
Transfers are not accepted — neither from another medical degree, nor from applicants who have already started any other degree course (apply in the final year of an existing degree instead). [32]
Fitness-to-practise screening at application stage: the Excluded Students Database is checked for all applicants currently studying or carrying out regulated work.
How Aberdeen selects for interview

UCAT points: totals are split into deciles and then half-deciles, awarding 60 points at the top half-decile and decreasing by 3 per half-step (max 60 points).
