Entry requirements
A-Levels
Offer: AAA including Biology or Chemistry plus one further from Biology, Chemistry, Maths or Physics — the third A-Level can be any subject. You need predicted or achieved grades of at least AAB to be considered. [10]
General Studies and Critical Thinking are not accepted, nor (for non-native English speakers) an A-Level in your original language of instruction. [11]
A-Level resits considered if you dropped one grade in one subject (e.g. A*A*B, A*AB or AAB); you must be predicted at least the required grade in the resit. Maximum one resit; resit grades aren't capped. [12]
EPQ is welcomed but does not form part of any offer that BSMS make. [13]
No near misses — conditional offers must be met in full to confirm your place. [14]
If you take an original-language-of-instruction A-Level, a fourth A-Level at grade A (or B with contextual data) is required. [15]
GCSE
UCAT
No fixed UCAT cut-off — thresholds are set dynamically each year based on the applicant pool.
SJT Band 4 is automatically rejected — only Bands 1, 2 or 3 progress to UCAT ranking. [26]
SJT is used as an eligibility gate, not a scoring component — Bands 1–3 are all ranked equivalently on UCAT total; Band 4 is excluded. [26]
International Baccalaureate
Offer: 36 points with grade 6 in HL Biology or Chemistry and grade 6 in one further HL from Biology, Chemistry, Maths or Physics. A predicted or obtained 35 points (grades 5 and 6 at HL in those subjects) is the minimum to be considered. [16]
Scottish Highers
Offer: AAA in three Advanced Highers including Biology or Chemistry plus one further from Biology, Chemistry, Maths or Physics — or grade A in two such Advanced Highers plus grade A in two additional Highers. National 5 English and Maths at grade B also required. [17]
BTEC
BTECs count only alongside two A-Levels: AA (including Biology or Chemistry plus one further from Biology, Chemistry, Maths or Physics) with a Level 3 Extended BTEC Certificate at Distinction (Merit with an adjusted offer). Predicted or obtained AA + Merit is the minimum to be considered. [19]
Other qualifications
BSMS-recognised Access to HE Diploma (Medicine) with 60 credits including 45 Level 3 credits at Distinction (covering all Biology and Chemistry modules). For mature entrants (21+ at enrolment) after an extended gap from education who haven't studied Biology and Chemistry at A-Level or degree level; GCSE English and Maths at 6/B (5/C with contextual data) still required. [20]
Access applicants already holding qualifications in the relevant sciences at or below the standard entry requirements are not considered — only BSMS-recognised courses count. [21]
Recognised Pre-Medical courses are also accepted: Distinction overall and in each module, plus GCSE English and Maths at 6/B (or IELTS 7.0 with 7.0 in each component). [22]
Graduates: first or upper-second class science degree demonstrating adequate Biology and Chemistry, plus three A-Levels at BBB including Biology or Chemistry and one further from Biology, Chemistry, Maths or Physics. GCSE English and Maths requirements still apply; a 2:2 plus MSc is not accepted; degree grade requirements are not reduced for contextual applicants. [23]
Irish Leaving Certificate
Offer: H2 in HL Biology or Chemistry plus one further HL from Biology, Chemistry, Maths or Physics, and at least H2 in four other subjects. English and Maths needed at O3 (ordinary) or H3 (higher). [18]
Qualification policies
All qualifications must have been achieved within 10 years of the start date of the course. [9]
Age
You must be at least 17 at the start of the course — applicants who will be 16 or under cannot be considered. There is no upper age limit. [27]
Application history
Applicants who have previously studied any part of a medical degree cannot apply — those who failed to complete a medicine degree are considered only with exceptional mitigation. [28]
Reapplicants are actively welcomed and can reapply as often as they want — but you must retake the UCAT each cycle. [29]
Entry is only into Year 1 — no transfers or advanced standing into later years; partly completed degrees aren't normally accepted as entry qualifications. [30]
How BSMS selects for interview
BSMS rank eligible applicants by UCAT total score alone (single passthrough component) — no composite scoring or academic-points blend; eligible applicants are ranked purely on their overall UCAT score within each cohort. [31]
Home, international and contextual cohorts are ranked separately with different UCAT thresholds. [32]
