Entry requirements

A-Levels

Offer: AAA including Biology/Human Biology or Chemistry plus a second subject from Chemistry, Biology/Human Biology, Physics, Psychology, Maths or Further Maths; applications are screened against this AAA threshold before progressing. Resitters must achieve A*A*A in the same subjects. [5]

Resits permitted for only one of Year 12 or Year 13; if Year 13, ABB at first sitting required, and resitters must achieve A*A*A. [6]

Only three A-Levels are counted — additional A-Levels won't be included in any offer. [7]

Very similar subject combinations are not accepted in the offer — e.g. Biology with Human Biology, or Maths with Further Maths. [8]

The practical endorsement must be passed for any science A-Level. [9]

EPQs are not normally included in the conditions of offer. [10]

GCSE

Grade 6 (B) minimum in English Language, Maths and at least two sciences; English Literature is not accepted in lieu of English Language. [19]

At least 7 GCSEs at grade 7 (A) or above overall. [20]

GCSE resits are permitted; pending resits must be listed on the UCAS form. [21]

One Level 2 BTEC at Distinction or above is acceptable in lieu of one GCSE (short courses are not accepted). [22]

UCAT

2026 entry threshold: 2060 (home/standard) on the new 3-section UCAT (max 2700); threshold is set after UCAT results each November and varies year-on-year. [23]

SJT Band 3 or 4 is an automatic rejection — only Bands 1 and 2 are considered; SJT band is also used as a tie-break alongside UCAT total when interview slots are oversubscribed. [24]

UCAT is changing for 2026 entry; Manchester has flagged it will update the SJT-band policy when the full UCAT changes are known. [25]

International Baccalaureate

Offer: 36 points overall with 6,6,6 at Higher Level, including Chemistry or Biology plus another science from Chemistry, Biology, Physics, Psychology or Maths at HL; applications are screened against this threshold. Maths and English Language not taken in the Diploma need GCSE/IGCSE grade B (6). [11]

IB Career-related Programme (IBCP) students should contact the admissions team before applying so their academic profile can be considered. [12]

Scottish Highers

AAAA in four Highers by the end of S5 (same sitting, first attempt), plus either AAA in three Advanced HighersChemistry or Biology, a second science and one other rigorous academic subject — or AA in two Advanced Highers (including Chemistry or Biology) plus grade A in a third A2-level subject or a further Higher. English and any science not taken at Higher/Advanced Higher must be at National 5 (SCQF level 5). [13]

BTEC

BTEC Nationals are not considered (Extended Diploma, Diploma, Foundation Diploma, Extended Certificate — and legacy pre-2016 BTECs); the same applies to OCR Cambridge Technicals. One Level 2 BTEC at Distinction can stand in for one GCSE only. [14]

Other qualifications

Science-based Access to HE Diploma — 60 credits with 45 at Level 3 (≥15 graded credits each in Biology and Chemistry), all Level 3 credits at Distinction. Applicants need ≥3 years out of education before the Access course, can't use it to top up A-level grades, and must offer GCSE Maths at grade B (6). [15]

The Advanced Skills Baccalaureate Wales is accepted alongside two A-levels; the minimum grade required is normally the lowest grade in the A-level offer. [16]

T Levels are not accepted for entry to this course. [17]

Graduates need a 2:1 honours degree plus BBB at A-level (or 32 IB points) achieved at the first sitting — a relevant science degree exempts the A-level subject requirements but the BBB standard still applies. A-level resits to improve grades are not accepted from graduates; ordinary/ungraded degrees are not accepted, and UCAT and GCSE Maths at grade B (6) are still required. [18]

Application history

Up to two consecutive unsuccessful applications to Manchester are allowed — a third will not be considered; re-applicants must retake the UCAT and show a material difference. [26]

Applicants who have started a clinical programme elsewhere are not considered. [27]

Transfers from other institutions are not considered — applicants on the wrong course elsewhere must first complete (or be in the final year of) their current programme. [28]

Section 02

How Manchester selects for interview

Ranking score is the UCAT total (threshold to qualify; tie-break when interview slots are oversubscribed). The SJT band is an eligibility gate (Bands 3/4 rejected) and a secondary tie-break — not a points component. Personal statement is not read in the offer process (confirmed by FOI 026-152). [29]

Home and international applicants are ranked separately — the overseas cohort has a higher UCAT threshold. [23]
