Entry requirements
A-Levels
Offer: A*AA including Biology and Chemistry, one of them at A*. The same grades gate every stage — predicted grades must meet A*AA, and completed A-Levels are checked against it. Higher grades confer no advantage. [6]
General Studies, Critical Thinking and Global Perspectives and Research are not accepted. [7]
At least two A-Levels must be from UCL's preferred subjects list; the third can be in any other subject. [8]
Grades are an eligibility gate, not a ranking input — UCL does not score or rank GCSEs or A-Levels. [9]
GCSE
UCAT
No fixed UCAT cut-off — thresholds emerge from each year's rankings and are published retrospectively. [18]
SJT is used only as a tie-break between candidates on the same total UCAT score — no SJT band is auto-rejected. [19]
All candidates must sit the UCAT in the year of application — re-applicants must resit, and candidates may only test once per year. [20]
International Baccalaureate
Offer: 39 points with 19 points across three Higher Level subjects, including 7 and 6 in Biology and Chemistry in either order; no HL score below 5. Predicted IB must meet the same requirement. [10]
Scottish Highers
Offer: A1,A,A at Advanced Higher — or A1,A at Advanced Higher plus A,A,A at Higher — including Chemistry and Biology at Advanced Higher with either at A1 (band 1). [11]
BTEC
Other qualifications
Only the Access to HE Diploma (Medicine) from the College of West Anglia is accepted — Pass with 36 credits at Distinction and 9 credits at Merit, all from Level 3 units. If you are on another course in the QAA Subject Descriptor pilot, contact UCL before applying. [13]
Offer: D2,D3,D3 in three Principal Subjects including Chemistry and Biology with either at D2. [14]
T Levels are not accepted for entrance to this programme. [12]
Graduates: upper second-class (2:1) Honours from a recognised UK university (science and non-science equally; non-UK degrees not accepted), plus pre-degree A-Levels of at least ABB including Chemistry and Biology (or IB 34 points with 16 HL and 6,5,5). A-Levels taken after the degree must be at A*/A. There is no fast-track graduate programme — graduates join the standard course and skip the iBSc year. [15]
Without A-Level (or IB HL) Chemistry and Biology, you can submit details of university Biology/Chemistry modules for consideration — but the A-Level requirement is not normally waived. GCSE English Language and Maths at grade B still applies. [16]
Qualification policies
Resits are not accepted — including re-starting Year 12. Two exceptions: GCSEs may be resat to meet the GCSE requirement, and graduates who resat A-Levels before their degree are still considered. [5]
Age
You must be 18 when the course starts — under-18s are considered for a deferred place or advised to reapply. There is no upper age limit. [21]
Application history
Reapplication is allowed — including for candidates previously unsuccessful at interview at UCL. Re-applicants must resit UCAT in the year they reapply. [22]
If you previously started but did not complete a medicine degree at another medical school, you will not usually be considered; after a withdrawal on health grounds UCL expects you to return to your previous institution. [23]
Transfers into the MBBS from other courses are not accepted. [24]
