A-Levels
- You must be taking Biology (or Human Biology) and Chemistry. Predicted grades aren't used at any stage of selection.1
- Citizenship Studies, Critical Thinking, General Studies and Global Perspectives aren't accepted as the third A-Level.1
- A pass in science practical tests is required where these are assessed separately.1

- Applicants aged 17 or above are accepted (under-18s fall under the University's Under 18 policy).1
Resits & reapplying
- A-Levels must be passed in one sitting over a maximum two-year period. Resits are considered for up to two subjects if you completed your A-Levels in the last 12 months and already hold ABB with an A in Biology/Human Biology or Chemistry - your resit grades must then meet AAA.1
- One GCSE resit is allowed - Maths, English Language, Biology, Human Biology, Chemistry or Double Science - to at least 6 (B) in Maths/English Language or 7 (A) in the sciences.1
- Reapplications are welcome, but you can be interviewed a maximum of three times across Nottingham's medicine courses - and after a second interview you must usually wait three academic years before the final application.3
- Applicants who started but did not complete a medical degree at another UK institution are not accepted (limited exception for study abroad interrupted by non-academic reasons such as war).1
- Transfers aren't accepted - from another Nottingham course, another university, or another medical school.1
Selection & shortlisting
- Nottingham ranks you for interview on a single score out of 82, built from three parts:2
- GCSEs - up to 32 points. Your best eight grades: 9/A* = 4, 8 = 3, 7/A = 2, 6/B = 1 (below 6 = 0).2
- UCAT cognitive - up to 40 points. Each subtest is banded in 2-point steps from 801+ = 10 down to below 400 = 0. Verbal Reasoning counts double (max 20); Abstract Reasoning isn't used.2
- SJT - up to 10 points: Band 1 = 10, Band 2 = 6, Band 3 = 2. Band 4 is rejected.2
- Applicants are ranked in five separate pools: Home GCSE, Home Non-GCSE, International GCSE, International Non-GCSE, and Contextual.
- A-Levels, AS-Levels, personal statements and references earn no points - grades only set the conditions of your offer.2
- Applicants without GCSEs (or applying with a degree) are ranked on UCAT alone, in the separate Non-GCSE pools.2
- Elite athletes (per the University's Department of Sport criteria) get a fast track to interview if the minimum entry requirements are met, and a reduced offer of AAB with at least one A in Biology or Chemistry.2
- The threshold depends on each year's applicants - our estimate is that 55 out of 82 gives a realistic chance of an interview.2

In the 2025 cycle, the lowest UCAT score invited to interview (home applicants) was 1620 (converted from the old 4-section scale). You must sit the UCAT in your application year. There's no fixed cut-off - the threshold changes each year with the applicant pool. SJT Band 4 is auto-rejected before interview.
