Entry requirements
A-Levels
Offer: AAA in one sitting including Chemistry and one from Biology/Human Biology, Maths/Further Maths or Physics. Only one of Maths or Further Maths — and one of Biology or Human Biology — is considered. [11]
GCSE
Biology, Chemistry, English and Maths all at A/7 at GCSE. Double Award combined sciences at AA/77 may replace the separate science grades; Applied Science is not accepted. [22]
UCAT
Minimum UCAT total 1850 for 2027 entry — applicants below the cut-off are not considered (Plus Flag applicants are exempt; see contextual variant). [23]
SJT Band 4 is an automatic rejection for all applicants — regardless of widening-access eligibility. SJT band also contributes a score that feeds the composite ranking. [24]
International Baccalaureate
Offer: 38 points with 6,6,6 at Higher Level including HL Chemistry plus one from Biology, Maths or Physics, with SL Maths, English and Biology at 6 (each unless taken at HL; English ab initio not accepted). [12]
If Maths or English Language are not part of your IB diploma, GCSE (or equivalent) at A/7 is accepted instead. [13]
Scottish Highers
Offer: AAAAB at Higher by end of S5 plus BB at Advanced Higher in S6, including Higher Chemistry and two from Biology/Human Biology, Maths/Applications of Maths or Physics, with Biology, Chemistry, English and Maths at B at National 5. Offers are conditional on S6 performance. [14]
Missing a required science at S5? You may take the missing subject(s) in S6. Only one of Maths or Applications of Maths counts towards the three required subjects, and only one of Biology or Human Biology is considered. [15]
Higher Applications of Maths at C is accepted in place of National 5 Maths at B. [16]
Other qualifications
Access courses are recognised as alternative routes to the MBChB — but Foundation Year Programmes are strictly not accepted. [17]
SWAP Access to Medical Studies: offers require AAA in Maths, Biology and Chemistry, 80%+ in each subject component and an overall pass. Access to HE Diploma (Medicine) (undertaken from 2021-22 onwards): distinctions in all subjects, achieved or predicted. [18]
SWAP eligibility requires having been out of full-time education for at least 3 years — check eligibility with SWAP directly. [19]
Graduates: 2:1 UK honours degree (or international equivalent), preferably in a medical-related subject (e.g. Biomedical Sciences, Nursing). Other-science 2:1s are considered, and non-science graduates also need Higher/A-Level Chemistry at B. You must have completed your degree or be in your final year; there is no fast-track programme, though graduates may bypass the Year 3 research year. [20]
Mature non-graduate applicants get no special concessions — the same school-leaver requirements apply, achieved within the 3-year recency window. [21]
Qualification policies
No resits — every grade must be obtained at the first attempt (AS module resits are not normally permitted). Resit applicants are not entered into selection except in very exceptional circumstances with verified evidence provided before the UCAS application. [9]
Qualifications must have been obtained within 3 years of the start of the programme — the same requirement applies to mature applicants and graduates' science qualifications. [10]
Application history
Reapplication permitted — applicants reapplying must resit the UCAT for the new cycle. [25]
Transfers into the programme are extremely limited — only accepted from institutions with prior agreement (e.g. St Andrews matching scheme). Internal transfers from other Edinburgh degrees are not permitted, and applicants midway through another degree are not eligible. [26]
How Edinburgh selects for interview
Places are allocated separately by fee status — Scotland, RUK/RoI and Overseas/EU are each ranked against their own quota; there is no single combined ranking.
No published composite cutoff — Edinburgh invites approximately the top-scoring 800 applicants across cohorts to Assessment Day; per-cohort thresholds and the underlying point tables are FOI-withheld. [27]
