Section 01

Entry requirements

A-Levels

Offer: AAA including Chemistry and Biology. An A* cannot compensate for a B (A*A*B is not accepted), and a fourth A-Level gives no advantage. [10]

Chemistry + Biology cannot be paired with Human Biology, Sports Science or Critical Thinking as the third A-Level. [11]

EPQs are not considered within scoring. [12]

GCSE

Grade 6 minimum in Maths, English Language, Biology and Chemistry (or Dual Science). [22]

At least 6 GCSEs at grade 6 or above required. [22]

Applicants meeting the minimum only are unlikely to be shortlisted — scoring is based on 8 GCSEs. [23]

All GCSEs must be achieved by the time of application — including English Language if it isn't integrated into your Level 3 qualification. [24]

UCAT

No UCAT cut-off score — UCAT is a contributory element to the academic score, not a threshold. The test must be taken in the year of application. [25]

SJT band is not used for shortlisting at Leeds.

International Baccalaureate

Offer: 36 points with 6,6,6 at Higher Level including Chemistry and Biology. If English and Maths are not offered at GCSE, they must be taken at Standard Level with at least grade 5. [13]

Scottish Highers

Offer: AAAAB at Higher plus AA at Advanced Higher in Chemistry and Biology. [14]

Other qualifications

Access to HE Diploma (Medicine) conforming to the QAA subject descriptor — 60 credits, all units passed, with all 45 graded Level 3 credits at Distinction — plus at least 6 GCSEs at grade 4 including English Language, Maths and Dual Science (or Chemistry and Biology). [16]

Distance-learning Access Diplomas are not accepted, and applicants with a previous degree below 2:1 are only considered with substantial subsequent healthcare or demanding professional experience. [17]

Offer: 3 Distinctions (D3) in 3 Principal subjects including Chemistry and Biology. [18]

T Levels are not accepted for this course. [19]

Graduates: minimum 2:1 honours degree in any discipline awarded within the last three years, plus ABB at A-Level including Chemistry and Biology (one at grade A) or international equivalent, and six GCSEs at grade 5+ including Maths, English Language, Biology and Chemistry or Dual Science. [20]

A partly completed degree is not acceptable in place of the entry qualifications. [21]

Irish Leaving Certificate

Offer: H2H2H2H2H2H2 including Chemistry, Biology and Mathematics. [15]

Qualification policies

From 2026 entry, one resit attempt per A-Level and per GCSE is accepted without mitigating circumstances; a third attempt needs evidence of mitigating circumstances. [8]

Applicants must show evidence of full-time education in the last 5 years. [9]

Age

Applicants must be 18 or over by the first day of the course. [26]

Application history

Applicants who have previously studied medicine are not accepted.

Reapplication allowed — one only; further reapplications need exceptional circumstances, and previous offers don't guarantee a new one. [27]

Internal transfers from another medical school are not supported.

Section 02

How Leeds selects for interview

The composite score combines three known inputs — UCAT total, best 8 GCSEs and Level 3 academic grades — and a high academic score can compensate for a lower UCAT and vice versa. The weighting of each input and how each is scored are withheld under FOI Section 36(2)(c), so the formula cannot be reproduced. [28]

GCSE scoring uses the applicant's best 8 GCSEs. [23]
