Section 01

Entry requirements

A-Levels

Offer: AAA including Chemistry and Biology or Human Biology — offers made may range up to A*AA. A-Levels are an eligibility gate only (not scored; interview ranking is by UCAT), and achieved grades are treated the same as predicted. [8]

General Studies, Critical Thinking and Citizenship Studies are not accepted. [9]

A-Levels must be completed in one sitting across a maximum of two years — a third year of study (e.g. resits) is permitted only via an approved Extenuating Circumstances application. GCSE resits are accepted. [10]

GCSE

Minimum grade 6 (B) in English Language, Maths and Science (Double or Triple Award) — GCSEs are an eligibility gate only (not scored, not capped to a best-N). [17]

At least five GCSEs graded 6 (B) or above. GCSEs are not capped to a best-N — there is no GCSE scoring component. [18]

GCSE resits are accepted. Adult Literacy and Numeracy or Functional Skills are not accepted in place of GCSEs. [19]

UCAT

No fixed minimum total UCAT score — the overall cut-off is calculated each year from the applicant pool and available places, and ranking is on raw UCAT total. [20]

Minimum 500 in each individual UCAT section — a hard eligibility gate regardless of overall total. [21]

No SJT band auto-rejection — there is no minimum SJT band requirement and Band 4 does not result in automatic rejection. SJT banding is considered in decision-making (from 2026 entry, used post-interview when ranking MMI + SJT scores). [22]

No extenuating circumstances are considered for UCAT test scores. [23]

International Baccalaureate

Offer: 36 points overall with 18 points at Higher Level, including grade 6 in HL Biology and Chemistry. At Standard Level a minimum 5 in Maths and English is needed unless already achieved at 6 (B) at GCSE/IGCSE (both IB Maths routes accepted). [11]

IB resits are not accepted where they require a third year of study. [12]

Scottish Highers

Offer: Highers AAA plus Advanced Highers AA, both including Chemistry and Biology, with National 5 English Language and Maths at grade B. [13]

Scottish resits are not accepted where they require a third year of study. [12]

Other qualifications

Full Access to Medicine Diploma (QAA-recognised): 60 level-3 credits with 39 at Distinction and 6 at Merit, and all Chemistry and Biology credits at Distinction. Access applicants need only GCSE English Language and Maths at 6 (B). Not open to graduates, or to anyone who completed the required Level 3 subjects within the past five years; resits requiring a second year are not accepted. [14]

Cambridge Pre-U Diploma: D3, D3, D3 in three principal subjects including Biology and Chemistry — GCSE requirements also apply, and resits requiring a third year of study are not accepted. [15]

Graduates: 2:1 Honours in any discipline, completed and awarded by 31 July of the application year — or a 2:2 plus a completed postgraduate degree (by 31 August). Graduates do not need to meet the GCSE or A-Level requirements and cannot apply on Level 3 qualifications. [16]

Qualification policies

For non-graduate applicants, all qualifications except GCSEs must have been completed within the previous five years, including the year of application. [7]

Application history

Reapplications in future cycles are welcome. A second application in the same cycle (e.g. main cycle then Clearing) is not permitted if an interview was already conducted in the first application.

Applicants who previously started but did not complete Medicine elsewhere are considered case-by-case, with formal evidence of withdrawal required (by 1 November of the application year). Fitness-to-practise checks begin only after an offer is firmed. [24]
