A-Levels
- You must be taking Chemistry or Biology plus a second science from Maths, Physics, Biology/Human Biology, Chemistry or Psychology. Predictions must be at least AAA.1
- Critical Thinking, Further Maths and General Studies do not count towards the three A-Levels.1
- If you take four A-Levels including Maths and Further Maths, the Maths A-Level counts even if sat in Year 12 - Chemistry/Biology and another acceptable subject must be taken in Year 13.1
- AS-Levels aren't considered.1
GCSE
- You need at least grade 6/B in Maths, English Language and one science (Dual Award acceptable).1
- You need five GCSEs at grade 7/A - the five may include Maths, English Language and a science.1
- Acceptable science GCSEs: Biology, Chemistry, Environmental Science, Physics, Psychology or dual-award Science. Short Courses don't count.1
- GCSE English Language 6/B can instead be met by grade B in SQA Higher/Advanced Higher English or A-Level English Language; international applicants need IELTS 7.5 (min 7.0 per component) or equivalent.1
UCAT
- You must sit the UCAT in your application year. Sheffield sets a fixed cut-off - 1800 out of 2700. Below it you're rejected outright, and higher grades can't compensate.1
- No SJT band excludes you - the SJT only feeds the interview scoring.1
- Applicants exempted from the UCAT on geographic grounds won't normally be considered.2
- UCAT scores aren't adjusted for mitigating circumstances - use the Disrupted Studies form instead.2
Age
- You must be 18 by the first day of the course - if you'd still be under 18, you're required to defer.2
Resits & reapplying
- The three A-Levels must all be taken in the same first sitting, each studied for no more than two years - A-Levels taken early aren't considered. Resits are accepted the following year, all in one sitting, one resit per A-Level.1
- GCSE resits accepted - all in one sitting, one resit per GCSE, and the requirements must be met by the point of application.1
- Reapplication welcomed - unsuccessful applicants may apply again the following year.2
- If you were previously unsuccessful in a medicine degree elsewhere, you will not be considered. If you're currently reading another degree, you're only considered in your final year.2
- No transfers - neither from other UK medical schools nor from other University of Sheffield degree programmes.2

- Once you pass the academic check, you're ranked and selected purely by your total UCAT score - only the highest scorers are interviewed.2
- Home and international applicants are ranked separately.2
- In 2026 the Home cutpoint was 2120 (on the 2700-scale UCAT) - our estimate is you'd need around 2160 next cycle.2
- Contextual applicants are ranked against the same thresholds as everyone else. Only Access to Sheffield (Medicine) participants and recognised Bradford / Sheffield Hallam pathway applicants skip the ranking - they go straight to interview once they meet the 1800 UCAT minimum.1
- The personal statement and reference aren't scored - though UCAS-flagged plagiarism means rejection, and offers are subject to a satisfactory reference.2
