Sheffield Medicine: Entry Requirements & UCAT Cutoff (2027 Entry)
The grades and UCAT score you need for Medicine (A100) at University of Sheffield Medical School, how shortlisting works, and where the thresholds have fallen - sourced line-by-line from the university's own publications.
Entry requirements
A-Levels
Offer: AAA including Chemistry or Biology and a second science from Maths, Physics, Biology/Human Biology, Chemistry or Psychology (Chemistry + Biology together is fine). Applicants without completed A-Levels must be predicted at least AAA. [9]
Critical Thinking, Further Maths and General Studies do not count towards the three A-Levels. [10]
Resits are accepted — but the three A-Levels must first all be taken in the same first sitting; resits go in the following year, all in one sitting, with one resit per A-Level. [11]
A-Levels taken early are not considered, and each A-Level should be studied for no longer than two years. [12]
EPQ alternative offer: AAB at A-Level plus grade A in the EPQ (taken alongside A-Levels; the A must be in Chemistry or Biology). Resitting any A-Level voids it — the standard AAA then applies. [13]
Taking four A-Levels including Maths and Further Maths? The Maths A-Level counts even if sat in Year 12 — but Chemistry/Biology and another acceptable subject must be taken in Year 13. [14]
AS-Levels are not considered at any point in the application. [15]
Exceeding the minimum grades gives no advantage — the academic check is pass/fail, and ranking for interview is by UCAT only. [16]
GCSE
At least grade 6/B in Maths, English Language and one science (Dual Award acceptable). [28]
Five GCSEs at grade 7/A — the five 7s may include Maths, English Language and/or a science. [29]
GCSE resits accepted — all resits in the same sitting, one resit per GCSE; requirements must be met by the point of application and each GCSE studied for no longer than two years. [30]
Acceptable science GCSEs: Biology, Chemistry, Environmental Science, Physics, Psychology or dual-award Science. Non-GCSE Level 2 qualifications and GCSE Short Courses don't count. [31]
GCSE English Language 6/B can instead be met by grade B in SQA Higher/Advanced Higher English or A-Level English Language; international applicants need IELTS 7.5 (min 7.0 per component) or equivalent. [32]
UCAT
Minimum UCAT cognitive total of 1800/2700 for 2027 entry (set at the 40th centile score across the 2024, 2025 and 2026 test years). Below the threshold you are rejected outright. [33]
No SJT band excludes you pre-interview — Sheffield does not use the SJT to shortlist. It is only reviewed if you are invited to interview, where the SJT quartile is converted to a /5 score (Q1=5, Q2=4, Q3=3, Q4=2) and added to the MMI total. [34]
SJT band is not used pre-interview — it is converted to a 1–5 score (Q1=5, Q2=4, Q3=3, Q4=2) and added to the MMI total at interview. [34]
The UCAT must be sat in the year you apply. Applicants exempted from the UCAT on geographic grounds will not normally be considered. [35]
No adjustment is made to UCAT scores for mitigating circumstances — disrupted-studies cases are handled via the Disrupted Studies form instead. [36]
International Baccalaureate
Offer: 36 points with 6,6,6 at Higher Level including Chemistry or Biology and a second science, and no less than 4 in every Standard Level subject. [17]
Scottish Highers
Offer: AAABB at Higher plus AA at two Advanced Highers — the Advanced Highers in Chemistry or Biology and a second science. [18]
BTEC
BTECs are not accepted. [20]
Other qualifications
QAA-approved Access to HE Diploma (Medicine): 60 credits with all 45 graded Level 3 credits at Distinction. Open only if you have not studied Biology/Chemistry A-Level (or a relevant science degree) in the three years before starting the Access course. [21]
Access courses cannot be used to re-sit A-Levels, distance-learning diplomas are not accepted, and graduates with below a 2:1 cannot apply via the Access route. GCSE, UCAT and interview requirements still apply, including UCAT ranking as usual. [22]
Offer: Welsh Baccalaureate Advanced Diploma at grade A plus AA in two A-Levels including Chemistry or Biology and another science. [23]
Offer: D3, D3, D3 in Chemistry or Biology and another science subject. [24]
T-Levels are not accepted. [25]
Graduates: at least a 2:1 Bachelor's degree in any subject plus BBB at A-Level including Chemistry or Biology, all three A-Levels in one sitting. If your pre-degree A-Levels lacked Chemistry/Biology, a grade B in it taken during or after your degree counts. [26]
No exemptions from any part of the course for science, biomedical-science or dental graduates. Masters degrees and PhDs are not considered. [27]
Irish Leaving Certificate
Offer: H1,H1,H2,H2,H2,H2 with H1 in Chemistry or Biology and another science subject. O2 in Ordinary-Level English and Maths (or H4 at Leaving Cert) covers the GCSE requirement. [19]
