Entry requirements
A-Levels
Offer: AAA including Chemistry plus one of Biology, Physics or Maths and a third academic subject — or A*AB with the A* and A in Chemistry plus Biology/Physics/Maths and the B in the third subject. A-Levels are taken in one sitting after a 2-year course. Predicted grades are not used to select non-graduates for interview. [8]
General Studies, Critical Thinking and Level-3 BTECs are not considered, and only one of Maths or Further Maths counts. [9]
Resits are allowed (case-by-case). Resitters must usually have achieved ABB at the first sitting, complete A-Levels within three years, and offer at least one A* — an A* is expected in any resat subject. The conditional offer is usually uplifted to A*AA. [10]
Liverpool also considers a range of other Level 3 equivalent qualifications on an individual basis (see the School's admissions guidelines). For 2027 entry it no longer publishes fixed offers for the AQA Baccalaureate, T-Levels or Cambridge Pre-U — these are assessed case-by-case. [11]
GCSE
Minimum grade B/6 in English Language, Maths, Biology and Chemistry (Core & Additional, combined or triple science is an acceptable alternative to the two separate sciences). [22]
Nine GCSEs by the end of Year 11. GCSE subjects are capped at a maximum of 9 for scoring — Liverpool does not select from a smaller best-8/7/6 set. [22]
A minimum score of 15 points is needed from the best 9 GCSEs or equivalents: A*/A/7/8/9 = 2 points, B/6 = 1 point (max 2 points per subject area; up to 4 for Dual Science, 6 for triple). This GCSE points score is the Stage-2 academic eligibility check. [23]
Some mature students returning to education may only need 5 GCSEs at grade B/6 (including English Language, Maths and Science), given other achievements they offer. [24]
UCAT
No fixed minimum UCAT score — UCAT is used to rank eligible applicants, and the interview threshold emerges from the applicant pool each year (it is not pre-set). [25]
SJT Band 4 excludes Home applicants — Home applicants must score Band 1–3 for their application to be processed. (International/EU applicants may offer any of the four bands — see International variant.) [26]
SJT is an eligibility gate, not a ranking component — the overall UCAT cognitive score (not subtest scores) is used to rank. [27]
International Baccalaureate
Offer: 36 points (at first sitting) with 6,6,6 at Higher Level including Chemistry plus one of Biology, Physics or Maths and a third academic subject — or 36 points with HL 7,6,5, the 7 and 6 including Chemistry plus Biology/Physics/Maths. 5,5,5 at Standard Level in subjects not offered at HL. Predicted scores are not used to shortlist. [12]
IB resitters must usually have achieved 34 points at the first sitting (and meet the GCSE criteria); any offer is usually higher than typical — minimum 37 points. [13]
Applicants who have already achieved 36 IB points (first sitting, subjects as above) may be considered with a minimum of 12 GCSE points instead of 15. [14]
Scottish Highers
Offer: five Highers at AAAAB taken in one sitting (after 1 year of study) including Chemistry and one of Biology, Physics or Maths, plus Advanced Highers AA in Chemistry and one of Biology/Physics/Maths. National 5s in Biology, Chemistry, English Language and Maths (and at least three others) are needed by the end of S4. [15]
BTEC
Level-3 BTECs are not considered as a third academic subject (not accepted in lieu of A-Levels). Up to two Level-2 BTECs/OCR awards can score towards the 9 GCSE-equivalents (not replacing English Language, Maths or Science). [17]
Other qualifications
Appropriate Access to Higher Education (Medicine or Science) courses are accepted — Liverpool considers QAA-approved Access to Medicine/Science qualifications from FE colleges (see the School's Access guidelines). APL/APEL is not usually accepted. [18]
Approved Access course / MSC Access to HE (Medicine) applicants are among the groups given special consideration in selection — this does not guarantee an interview or offer. [19]
The Advanced Welsh Baccalaureate Skills Challenge Certificate is accepted in lieu of the third academic A-Level (alongside Chemistry plus Biology/Physics/Maths). [20]
Graduates: 2:1 (achieved, or predicted in the final year) in an Honours or integrated Masters degree in any subject — or a 2:2 plus a postgraduate Masters/PhD. Graduate applicants sit GAMSAT, not UCAT, and are ranked in a separate pool. [21]
Irish Leaving Certificate
Offer: six Higher Level subjects in a single sitting — H1 in two subjects including Chemistry and one of Biology, Maths or Physics, plus H2 in four further academic subjects. English Language, Maths, Biology and Chemistry must be offered at GCSE-equivalent grade B/6 if not within the Leaving Certificate. [16]
Age
Applicants must be 18 by 1 October of the year of entry (required for Human Anatomy Resource Centre access). [28]
Application history
Reapplications are limited: an applicant rejected in a previous UCAS cycle may make only one further consecutive application to the same programme. [29]
Applicants who have withdrawn from another medicine programme are unlikely to succeed — considered only with extreme extenuating circumstances and evidence of academic progression. Plagiarised applications are automatically rejected. [30]
Transfers into the medicine programmes are not usually considered (each new application reviewed individually); applications from those in the second year of other degrees are also unlikely. [31]
How Liverpool selects for interview
The overall UCAT score is the rank (the SJT is a Band 1–3 gate for Home applicants, not part of the rank; subtest scores are not used individually). [27]
The lowest UCAT score invited to interview (Home, 2025 entry) was 2780, on the old 4-section UCAT scale (max 3600). This emerged after ranking — it is not a pre-set threshold and varies every year with the applicant pool.
