Section 01

Entry requirements

A-Levels

Offer: AAA including Chemistry or Biology plus one of Biology, Chemistry, Maths, Physics or Psychology (any third A-Level). You must be predicted AAA to be shortlisted, and grades must be taken within three academic years of application. [6]

General Studies and Critical Thinking are not accepted as the third A-Level; a practical pass is required in Biology, Chemistry and Physics. [7]

Resits accepted: predicted resit AAA counts if your first sitting was at least AAB (BBB for WAMS); already-achieved resit AAA counts regardless of first sitting. All grades within three academic years of application. [2]

AS Levels are not accepted on their own for entry. [8]

GCSE

Minimum grade 5/B in Maths, English Language and two science subjects. [20]

Minimum 4 GCSEs at grade 5/B or above. [21]

GCSE resits accepted — no grade requirements for the first sitting.

UCAT

No fixed UCAT cut-off — UCAT is used in selection but the score required varies year on year. [22]

SJT Band 4 applicants are not invited for interview — Bands 1–3 progress. [23]

International Baccalaureate

Offer: 36 points with 666 at Higher Level including Biology and/or Chemistry plus one other science, and including Mathematics or English. Must be taken within three academic years prior to the year of entry. [9]

Scottish Highers

Offer: ABB at Advanced Higher with AB from Biology and/or Chemistry and another science — or AAAAA at Higher including Biology and/or Chemistry and another science. Both routes also need National 5 (or GCSE) English Language and Maths at grade B/5 (the Highers route adds two N5 sciences), all within three academic years of entry. [10]

BTEC

BTEC qualifications are not accepted. [12]

Other qualifications

QAA-accredited Access to Medicine Diploma: 60 credits with 45 at Level 3 — at least 30 at Distinction plus 15 at Merit — awarded within three years of the entry year. The GCSE minimums still apply. [13]

Access applicants are not eligible for WAMS. [14]

D3, D3, D3 in Principal Subjects including Biology and/or Chemistry — if only one of the two is offered, the other is needed at A-Level grade A (or Dual Award Science A). [15]

T-Level Distinction in Health or Healthcare Science with at least grade A in the core component and Merit in the specialism, taken within three academic years of application. Accepted specialisms include Supporting the Adult Nursing / Midwifery / Mental Health / Children and Young People / Therapy Teams and Assisting with Healthcare Science. [16]

Graduates: minimum 2:1 honours degree awarded within the last five years, in an accepted subject (e.g. Biomedical Science, Biochemistry, Pharmacy, Physiology — ARU publishes the full list). Transcripts go to a panel decision; GCSE minimums and the UCAT still apply and GAMSAT is not accepted. [17]

No graduate entry programme — graduates start in Year 1 and complete the full five years. [18]

Nursing and Paramedic Science degrees are not accepted for entry to Medicine. [19]

Irish Leaving Certificate

Offer: three Higher Level subjects at H1 including Biology or Chemistry, plus three more at minimum H2 including Chemistry, Maths, Physics or Biology — within three academic years of entry. [11]

Qualification policies

Qualifications must be taken within three academic years of application/entry. [5]

Age

You must be 18 by the first day of the course (rule applies from 2027 entry onwards); younger applicants are advised to reapply the following year. [24]

Application history

Internal ARU transfers to Year 1 considered from first-year ARU undergraduate programmes — highly competitive; the same criteria as all other applicants apply. [25]

Applicants with a previous Level 4/5/6 attempt that ended in academic failure are not considered for entry. [26]
