A-Levels
GCSE
- You need at least grade 6/B in GCSE Biology, Chemistry, English Language and Mathematics (Double Award Science at 6-6/B-B counts in lieu of separate Biology and Chemistry).1
- You need at least 5 GCSEs at grade 6/B or above - the four required subjects plus one more.1
- Overseas-educated applicants without GCSE English Language need IELTS 7.5 overall (no element below 7.0) before interview. IELTS can't replace GCSE English Language if you took GCSEs.1
UCAT
Age
- You must be 18 on the first day of the course (mid-September).1
Resits & reapplying
- Resits are accepted with no cap on attempts, and previous grades aren't held against you. Predicted grades can be used for A-Level resits.
- All A-Levels (or accepted equivalents) must have been obtained within the two years prior to application.1
- For GCSE resits, final grades are required at the point of application - pending or predicted GCSE grades aren't considered.
- Reapplication is accepted - a previous unsuccessful application doesn't count against you.
- You're not considered if you previously enrolled on another medical degree and failed to progress.1
- Transfers from other medical programmes are not accepted.1
Selection & shortlisting
- All applicants who meet the minimum requirements are ranked and selected by their raw UCAT total - interview invitations go down the list to a threshold set each cycle.1
- Nothing else is scored - A-Levels and GCSEs are checked as requirements but carry no marks.1
- The personal statement isn't scored - it and the reference are only weighed after interview, for borderline applicants. The one exception: a reference with red flags can lead to rejection at any stage.
- The threshold depends on each year's applicants - our estimate is that around 1950 gives a realistic chance of an interview.
- Everyone is ranked in a single list - there's no international cohort and graduates are considered alongside all other applicants.
