Edge Hill Medicine: Entry Requirements & UCAT Cutoff (2027 Entry)
The grades and UCAT score you need for Medicine (A100) at Edge Hill University Medical School, how shortlisting works, and where the thresholds have fallen - sourced line-by-line from the university's own publications.
Entry requirements
A-Levels
Offer: AAA including Biology and Chemistry plus one other subject — or A*AB / A*A*B with the A* in Biology or Chemistry and the third subject at grade B. A-Levels are an eligibility gate only — not ranked; predicted grades are treated equally to achieved grades. [3]
General Studies, Critical Reasoning, Citizenship and Key Skills are not accepted as A-Level subjects. [4]
GCSE
Minimum grade 6/B in Biology, Chemistry, English Language and Mathematics (Double Award Science at 6-6/B-B accepted in lieu of separate Biology and Chemistry). GCSEs are an eligibility gate only — not ranked. [15]
At least 5 GCSEs at grade 6/B or above, including the four required subjects plus one further subject. There is no best-8 selection or cap — GCSEs are not scored. [15]
GCSEs must be achieved at the point of application — for GCSE resits, final grades are required and pending/predicted GCSE grades are not considered.
Overseas-educated applicants without GCSE English Language at 6/B need IELTS 7.5 overall (no element below 7.0), achieved before interview. IELTS cannot replace GCSE English Language for applicants who took GCSEs. [16]
UCAT
No fixed minimum UCAT score. Eligible applicants are ranked by UCAT total and a threshold is set each cycle from the applicant pool and the number of interview places. The actual threshold is not published (Edge Hill refused it under FOI s43(2)). [17]
SJT Band 4 is an automatic rejection. [18]
The UCAT is used as a ranking tool on raw total score; the SJT acts only as a gate (Band 4 rejected). Raw UCAT scores are used — no deciles, z-scores or scaling.
UCAT scores must have been achieved in the admissions cycle immediately prior to the intended year of entry. [19]
International Baccalaureate
Scottish Highers
Offer: Highers AAAAB including Biology, Chemistry and three other subjects — or Advanced Highers AAA in Biology, Chemistry and one other subject. [7]
BTEC
BTEC Extended Diploma is not accepted for this course. [9]
Other qualifications
A QAA-approved Access to HE Diploma (Medicine) is accepted: 60 credits overall with Distinction in 45 Level 3 credits, including at least 15 Level 3 credits in Chemistry and 15 in Biology (remainder in one other subject). It must have been obtained within the two years prior to application. [10]
The Access course must not have been started less than 3 years after completing A-Level or degree study, must comply with the QAA Medicine subject descriptor, and the standard GCSE requirement still applies. Access courses taken in place of resitting A-Levels are not recommended. [11]
Offer: D3, D3, D3 in Biology, Chemistry and one other subject. [12]
Graduates: 2:1 or above in a science-related degree (including Psychology) awarded within the two years prior to application (or postgraduate study in the past two years), plus ABB at A-Level including Biology and Chemistry — at least one at grade A with the other at grade B or above — and one other subject. The standard GCSE requirements also apply. There is no graduate entry point — graduates take the full 5-year programme. [13]
Applicants in the early stages of a non-medical degree who wish to withdraw (or who didn't complete a previous non-medical degree) may apply if they meet the standard entry criteria — no recognition of prior learning is given. [14]
Irish Leaving Certificate
Offer: H1, H1, H1 at Higher Level including Biology, Chemistry and one other subject, plus H2, H2, H2 including English Language and Mathematics. [8]
Qualification policies
Resits are accepted with no cap on the number of attempts, and no minimum requirement for previous grades — previous grades are not held against the application.
All A-Levels (or accepted equivalents) must have been obtained within the two years prior to application. [2]
Age
Applicants must be 18 or above on the first day of the course (typically mid-September). [20]
Application history
Reapplication is accepted — being unsuccessful in a previous year does not affect a new application; only the current application is considered.
Applicants who previously enrolled on another medical degree and failed to progress are not accepted. [21]
Transfers from other medical programmes are not accepted. Applicants in the early stages of a non-medical degree who wish to withdraw may apply if they meet the standard entry criteria. Fitness to practise is not screened at application stage. [21]
How Edge Hill selects for interview
UCAT total score (raw) is the sole ranking input — applicants are ordered by total and a per-cycle threshold determines interview invitations. [22]
No published UCAT threshold. Edge Hill sets it dynamically each cycle from the applicant pool and refused the figure under FOI s43(2) (commercial interest), so no numeric cutoff is available.
