Section 01

Entry requirements

A-Levels

Offer: A*AA including grade A in Biology and Chemistry. Predicted grades are assessed with equal weighting to achieved grades — there is no separate predicted-grade bar. [3]

General Studies, Critical Thinking, Thinking Skills and Global Perspectives are not accepted as one of your A-Levels. [4]

Practical endorsement must be passed in all Science A-Levels (private candidates exempt). [5]

EPQ is not considered at any point of the assessment process. [6]

GCSE

Grade 6/B required in English Language and Mathematics. [13]

Studied abroad without GCSEs? International equivalents are considered — KCL looks for evidence of equivalency in your studies. [14]

UCAT

No UCAT cut-off — KCL explicitly does not set a threshold UCAT score in any cycle. [15]

SJT contributes points to the ranking score: Band 1 = 10, Band 2 = 5, Bands 3 and 4 = 0. Band 4 is not auto-rejected — it scores 0 alongside Band 3. [16]

UCAT must be taken in the same year you apply to be valid. [17]

International Baccalaureate

Offer: 38 points overall (including TOK/EE) or an aggregate score of 19 from three Higher Levels (e.g. 7,6,6), with grade 6 in HL Biology and HL Chemistry. [7]

IB equivalents for the GCSE gates: Maths via Analysis & Approaches or Applications & Interpretation at SL/HL grade 2 (or MYP Maths grade 5); English Language via SL/MYP grade 5, if not studied at Higher Level. [8]

Scottish Highers

Offer: AAB at Higher in one sitting plus AA at Advanced Higher, including grade A in Advanced Higher Chemistry and Advanced Higher Biology. The same subject cannot count at both Higher and Advanced Higher. [9]

The GCSE Maths gate can be met via National 5 grade B (or Intermediate 2 / Standard Grade Credit 1–2) if Maths is not taken at Higher/Advanced Higher.

BTEC

BTECs are not accepted for entry to Medicine.

Other qualifications

Access to HE Diploma in Medicine or Dentistry (QAA-accredited, 60 credits): 45 Level 3 credits — 39 at Distinction, 6 at Merit — including 15 Distinction credits in Biology and 15 in Chemistry. [10]

Access applicants whose earlier grades fell below the entry criteria count as resit applicants; Functional Skills and Numeracy/Literacy modules within the diploma do not meet the GCSE requirement. [11]

D2, D3, D3 in three Principal Subjects including D3 in Biology and Chemistry; Global Perspectives is not accepted. Pre-U Principal subjects can be combined with other qualifications (required subjects at D3, or grade A at A-Level).

Graduates are welcome on the 5-year A100: Bioscience graduates need a 2:1 in a Biosciences subject with Biology and Chemistry content; all other graduates need a 2:1 plus AA at A-Level in Biology and Chemistry. GCSE requirements still apply. [12]

Qualification policies

Resits are considered — FOI confirms equally to first sittings, though the public page cautions resit applicants are reviewed alongside strong first-sitting applicants. Second resits only with significant mitigating circumstances; retaking the same subject at the same level, even within a different qualification, counts as a resit. [2]

Age

Applicants must turn 18 before commencing the second year of the Medicine degree (KCL's age rule is unusual — the check is against start of Year 2, not Year 1). [18]

Application history

Transfers into MBBS are not permitted from another medicine programme. [19]

Section 02

How KCL selects for interview

UCAT percentile × 100 — importantly the percentile is within the KCL applicant pool for that cycle, not national. A national-D9 applicant will have a lower KCL-pool percentile because KCL's pool is stronger than national. Contributes 0–100 points out of 170. [16]

SJT band points: Band 1 = 10, Band 2 = 5, Bands 3 & 4 = 0. Band 4 is not auto-rejected at KCL — it scores 0 within the composite. Contributes 0–10 points out of 170.
