Entry requirements

A-Levels

Offer: A*AA including Chemistry and a second science from Biology, Human Biology, Physics or Maths. You must be predicted at least AAA to be considered. [10]

General Studies, Critical Thinking and EPQ are not accepted as a third A-Level. [11]

All three A-Levels should normally be taken in your final school year — AS grades are not used in selection. [12]

EPQ is not considered in selection, and Further Maths doesn't count alongside Maths A-Level. Science practicals must normally be passed. [13]

GCSE

Grade 6/B minimum in English Language, Maths, Biology and Chemistry (or dual-award science). [21]

Seven GCSEs required and all are scored — no exemptions. [22]

UCAT

No minimum UCAT cut-off score — UCAT total feeds the composite shortlisting score as a decile-based component. [23]

SJT band is not used at shortlisting — it converts to points at the offer stage (Band 1 = max, Band 4 = 0). [24]

International Baccalaureate

Offer: 32 points with 7,6,6 at Higher Level including Chemistry plus a second science from Biology, Physics or Maths. English, Biology and Maths are needed at Standard Level if not taken at Higher. [14]

Scottish Highers

Offer: five Highers at grade A including Chemistry, Maths, English and Biology or Physics, plus AA in two Advanced Highers including Chemistry. [15]

BTEC

BTECs are not accepted. [18]

Other qualifications

Access courses and Foundation programmes are not accepted. [18]

Offer: D3, D3, D3 in three subjects including Chemistry and one of Biology, Physics or Maths. [19]

Graduates: first or upper-second class degree in any subject, typically with GCSE A/B in Science, English and Maths and ABB at A-Level including Chemistry and a second science (waivable for English-taught, science-based or strongly quantitative degrees). Graduate applicants who meet the thresholds are ranked by UCAT only. [20]

Irish Leaving Certificate

Offer: H1 in four subjects including Chemistry and a second science from Biology, Physics or Maths. [16]

Junior Cycle: Distinction (85–100%) in six subjects including Biology, Chemistry, English and Maths. [17]

Qualification policies

Resits are not considered (except with extenuating circumstances) — grade thresholds must be met at the first sitting. [8]

Your most recent relevant qualification must be no more than 5 years old when the course starts. [9]

Application history

Applicants who have studied medicine previously are not considered, under any circumstances. [25]

Reapplication allowed only for those not previously invited to interview at Birmingham; post-interview rejections cannot reapply (waivable only with significant extenuating circumstances or sustained activity). [26]

Applicants previously interviewed and rejected by Birmingham Medical School cannot reapply. [27]

Transfers from another degree programme are not accepted. [28]

Section 02

How Birmingham selects for interview

Three scored components feed the 0–10 composite: GCSE score (specified subjects + best 2 others, scaled to max 4.5), UCAT decile (national decile → 0–4.0 scale) and POLAR4 contextual score (only added for contextual-eligible applicants, max 1.5). [29]

2025-entry composite shortlisting threshold: 7.236 / 10 (same minimum for both Standard and Contextual cohorts). Birmingham warns the threshold varies every year with the number and quality of applications, so it is indicative only. [30]
