A-Levels
- You must be taking Chemistry plus a second science from Biology, Human Biology, Physics or Maths, and be predicted at least AAA.1
- General Studies, Critical Thinking and EPQ aren't accepted as a third A-Level, and Further Maths doesn't count alongside Maths.1
- All three A-Levels should normally be taken in your final school year - AS grades aren't used.1
- Science A-Levels must normally include a pass in the practical endorsement.1

Resits & reapplying
- Resits aren't considered except with extenuating circumstances - grade thresholds must be met at the first sitting.1
- Your most recent relevant qualification must be no more than 5 years old when the course starts.1
- You can reapply only if you weren't previously invited to interview at Birmingham - after a post-interview rejection you're reconsidered only with significant extenuating circumstances or sustained significant activity since your last application.1
- If you've studied medicine previously (or are studying it now), you aren't considered - under any circumstances.1
- Transfers from another degree programme aren't accepted.1
Selection & shortlisting
- Birmingham ranks Home applicants for interview on a single score out of 10, built from three parts:2
- GCSEs - up to 4.5 points. Seven subjects count: the five specified (English Language, English Literature, Maths, Biology, Chemistry) plus your two best others.2
- UCAT - up to 4 points. By national decile: 4.0 for the top decile, stepping down evenly to 0 for the bottom.2
- Contextual - up to 1.5 points (contextual applicants only). By the POLAR4 quintile of your home postcode: 1.5 for quintile 1, 1.0 for quintile 2 and 0.5 for quintile 3.2
- Home and international applicants are ranked in separate pools.2
- Specified subjects: 9/8 = 4 points, 7 = 2, 6 = 1; lower grades score 0.2
- Your two best other GCSEs: 2 points each for a 9/8; lower grades score 0.2
- Ties at the cut-off are broken by UCAT total, primarily the Verbal Reasoning score.2
- The personal statement isn't scored - but it must still show commitment to medicine.2
- Graduates who meet the academic thresholds are ranked by UCAT alone - academic results aren't scored.1
- Birmingham interviews around 1,300 of the highest-scoring A100 applicants and typically makes 700-800 offers.3
- In 2025 the lowest Home score invited to interview was 7.236 out of 10 - our estimate is you'd need around 7.2 next cycle.2
