Entry requirements

A-Levels

A-Levels are not an entry route — Chester Medicine is graduate-entry only (A101): you must hold (or be completing) an undergraduate degree to apply. [2]

UCAT

No fixed test cut-off published — you must meet a threshold in one of UCAT, GAMSAT or MCAT, set annually above the national mean. [9]

Last published guide thresholds (2024 entry): UCAT 2540 overall (old 4-section scale) with 570+ in Verbal Reasoning; GAMSAT 60; MCAT 505. Newer figures have not been released. [10]

International Baccalaureate

IB is not an entry route — the course is graduate-entry only; a prior degree is the qualification gate. [2]

Scottish Highers

Highers/Advanced Highers are not an entry route — the course is graduate-entry only; a prior degree is the qualification gate. [2]

Other qualifications

2:1 honours degree in any subject required. A 2:2 is considered only with a Master's or Doctoral qualification; an intercalated Master's (e.g. MEng/MPharm) needs a Pass or above (minimum 2:2 equivalent). [3]

You can apply in your final undergraduate year — the offer is conditional on achieving a 2:1 or above. With a 2:2 and a Master's in progress, the offer is conditional on the Master's being awarded. [4]

Work experience: at least 70 hours, relevant to medicine, gained within the last 3 years (for 2027 entry: 15 Oct 2023 – 15 Oct 2026). [5]

Non-health-professionals need at least two relevant work experiences; one must involve direct hands-on care of people/patients with healthcare needs (paid or voluntary). [6]

Online/virtual work experience counts for a maximum of 10 hours towards the 70-hour total. [7]

One reference required from a person in a position of responsibility (not a relative or friend); an academic reference if you've been in higher education in the last two years. [8]

Application history

Applicants with previous academic failure at medical or dental school are not considered. Other genuine reasons are reviewed case-by-case, and entry is only ever into Year 1. [11]

Transfers in are not supported — entry is only into Year 1 via the standard admissions process. [12]

How Chester selects for interview

Chester does not publish the ranking/scoring formula used for shortlisting — its FOI 027-26 response refused disclosure under Section 43 FOIA (commercial sensitivity). The only public-facing rule is binary: meet the academic criteria AND the admissions-test threshold to be invited to interview. [13]

Interview invitation is gated on meeting the academic criteria and the admissions-test threshold — there is no published numeric ranking before interview. [13]
